This is a short guide on how someone in an IWW branch can create automatic recurring dues through paypal. This is faster and more reliable than collecting cash in person from everyone, and is highly recommended to give more time to do organizing. Create a specific email address for paypal payments to your branch, can easily do payment.iww.[branchname]@gmail.com In going through this training I did firstname.lastname@example.org
Go to https://www.paypal.com/us/home
Click “Sign Up” in top right corner
Click “Business Account” and hit Next
Use the payment email from step 1
Create a password
[I’m assuming the treasurer of the branch is filling this out.] For business contact, put in your first and last name. Put in the name of your local, phone number and address, for you or your union..
Agree to policies, and create account.
For type of business, put in nonprofit.
Business category: Other
Estimate monthly sales: up to $4,999.
For “Tell us More about [Individual who made account]” you need to put in last four digits of social security and home address. I assume that the treasurer of a branch will be the one filling this info out, or a delegate understood to be setting this up for use of the branch. Go forward.
You’ll want to link the new paypal to the bank account of your branch. Click Money, Transfer Money, Link to a Bank. You’ll need to do test deposit of small amounts, login to your bank the next day and use these to confirm the account.
To create automatic subscription button, go to home page of the paypal, click Tools, All Tools. Scroll down, click PayPal Buttons.
Go the right of the screen, click Subscribe.
Under Item Name, put in “Dues”.
Click “Customize Button, add a dropdown menu with prices and description.” Under description write “Dues”
Click “add another option”, this should create options 1 to 4.
Set the name and amount for dues. Suggest for Option 1: Maximum dues $33, Option 2: Regular Dues $22 Option 3: Minimum Dues $11 Option : Subminimum Dues $6. The default should be set for monthly, don’t change this. [Note: paypal takes 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, so the amount gathered is slightly less. Some branches charge slightly more for paypal option to cover this. Our branch voted for us to cover the costs. Figure this out collectively before you start setting this up.]
Click Done. Review the “Customer View” to the right, that should give people the option to select dues rate and subscribe.
If everything looks good, scroll down and hit “create button.”
You should now see code for website, copy and paste the whole thing into a text program. Here’s what it looks like for the example one I created:
You’ll need to have some basic website to put this code into. Can use whatever your have for your branch, or create a basic wordpress or google site. For this test, I went to Google Sites, https://sites.google.com (using the email@example.com account) and created a blank template, at https://sites.google.com/site/branchexampledues/
Edit your page for the top, for google sites click “edit page” on top. Click the button located in the right-most of the bars past the options to select text. Copy and past the url code from above. Click save.

Suggest creating at least a minimal other amount of information for the page, contact info for your branch. At some point getting a better base for your site would be recommended, but this works for dues purpose.
At this point, anyone should be able to go to the site and sign-up for automatic dues. Send people the specific link and steps to signing up, people who don’t have a paypal account will need to create it. Any delegate giving login to the paypal you created can check to see payments went through. Make sure to know which delegates will be tracking which payments for their delegate report (or have one delegate do them all). Make sure to note if the name on the email is different than the name the person uses commonly, avoid confusion.
If you get a new treasurer, decide if you want to shut down the paypal account and create a new one with the new treasurers’ info, or continue with this one.
